I'm on the menu screen, two options appear, one above the other, but I can't click or select either one.

use arrow keys to select an options, click X to select.
Its not mouse friendly, but I think the top option is "Play" and the second is "Quit". When you click "Play" (or whatever the top option is), you'll be selected with three options which.... I think are save slots? its hard to tell (I read 0 japanese).
pick one with X, click X some more, and game will start.
