Here is a gameplay example showing how the Exaggeration Score and the Epic Roll work together to help you write your journal.
The Setup
- The Chronicler: Snout (A Kobold with a flute made of a hollowed bone).
- The Hero: Sir Kaelen the "Stonewall" (A very serious, very slow paladin).
- Exaggeration Score: 4 (Snout likes to make things sound much more dramatic than they are).
The Turn
- Draw a Card: 7 of ♣ Clubs.
- Suit means: Physical/Action event.
- Roll 1d6 for Table: I rolled a 3.
- Event: "Ambush! (Yell loud)."
- The Epic Roll (Reality Check): I rolled a 1.
- Reality: "The Hero failed or looked silly." (Document as a brilliant feint).
The Journal Entry (The Result)
"Day 4: Disaster struck! A pack of mangy gnolls jumped from the shadows! Sir Kaelen, in a move of pure tactical genius, immediately threw himself face-first into the mud. The gnolls were so confused by his 'Dormant Dragon' stance that they froze in place, allowing me to let out a piercing war-shriek on my bone-flute that sent them running for the hills. Another flawless victory for the duo!"
Why it worked that way:
- The Reality (Roll 1): Kaelen actually just tripped and fell in the mud when the gnolls appeared.
- The Documentation: Because of the Epic Roll rule, Snout can't say the Hero tripped; he has to say it was a "brilliant feint."
- The Flavor: Because Snout has an Exaggeration Score of 4, he didn't just say they scared the gnolls away—he claimed his flute-playing was the killing blow.
