Escape is how you open the inventory as stated in the controls section, then all you need to do is click the item. The little star in the top right signifies which item you have equiped. When you ask Tenissa for advice they tell you that you need to find a bed in one of the universes to declare it as your home. Its a bit vague, but I wanted to try to stick to an in lore tutorial for the game, rather then having a text blurb tell you exactly what to do, next time I'll try to be more clear on what you have to do, or prevent the player from leaving Tenissa's shop without her telling you how to find a place to live. Reguardless, thank you for telling me your experince and I will take it into account on my next projects!
