Hi man, I've been playing Type Dreams for some years by now. Dunno, this game always made me feel good. Anyways, at almost 300 books typed I'm getting antsy to unlock more stuff. Some weeks ago, while fiddling with the options I finally unlocked some books in the Smut category, a bunch of new songs and (AT LAST) The Devil's Dictionary. Could you share some tips to unlocking more stuff? (IT IS ONE OF MY FAV GAMES EVER, I TYPED SOCRATE'S DEFENCE MULTIPLE TIMES, please help a brother out!) Thanks for making this masterpiece man!

You can use a hex editor to edit the save files to unlock most if not every book. This is the full list of books I have been able to unlock using this method. If you are aware of other entries not on the list, or how to obtain them legitimately, please let me know.

Which file did you modify to access the books like so? I've found a folder using process monitor that has some interesting files: C:\Users\username\Saved Games\Type Dreams\. Two files seem the most promising: playername_books.dat and agsave.999 (this might only contain the book sprites). But i still cant figure how to unlock the books. Also, I got locked out of my account because i forgot the password and tried everything in my might to find if the password was stored anywhere (no cigar). but, as luck would have it i found my password scribbled in a scrap notepad still in my drawer.

Password can be found in plaintext in [name].dat files.

To try and force unlock everything, open [name]_books.dat in a hexeditor (like HxD), search and replace, "hex-values", replace 4900 with 4901, replace all, save.

I would recommend you do this on a new profile, because it might have some side-effects, like marking empty entries as "new" and erasing your legitimate progress.

It should work, but I haven't checked if there are no entries missing.

That was way easier than i made it. Thank you!!!

Fire, Smoke, Sulfur can be unlocked by getting 100% accuracy in a sequence, regardless of WPM. (please be gentle to the poems, they were just me describing what I saw in my friend's art!)

haha wow

I’m sorry, but this isn’t everything. Still, I’m impressed. I chose against compiling Type Dreams with encryption for just this reason.

First thing: some of these texts don’t belong and were never “implemented” for players; they’re just remnants of experiments (ie lazymuthafucka, Royal Aristocrat, the LCS tidbit, and others). I never got (or sought!) permission from their original authors and of course I’d never consider them to be part of this game except incidentally or residually. Just my view. Honestly, I should’ve removed them before uploading, but I knew they’d be unreachable outside of datamining / decompiling / reverse-engineering. And why not leave something anomalous in there for just such an occasion?

bartterpstra’s list above shows most or damn-nearly everything that’s playable in the “Libary”. (There are only a few missing from this list. One called “POWER” comes to mind. I think you can get it by typing very slowly. “Shestov’s Challenge” is another, available after completing “Numbers” in <1 minute.)

Certain books (such as “SOME DAY WE WILL DIE” as mentioned in the list above) will only appear when players “Race”. Other racing-specific texts which aren’t accessible in the current version [v0.923 (the “Instability Edition”)] relate to a small typing contest for which a few friends synched simultaneous streams of Type Dreams (“The Royal Rum Bowl”). Minnie won, btw.

Most of the excised, sidelined, or unimplemented material in Type Dreams is either in “Story” or “Road” which of course are (conventionally?) inaccessible. These were attempts to depict the events of Mary Orr (aka Mae E. Orr) and Frank McGurrin (aka Frank E. McGurrin)’s type-writing contests in the 1890s and some other typing races from history. Just experiments and drafts, though. Nothing feasibly playable, I’m afraid.

I must also point out that these last ones, “Letter to a Casanova” and “Octopuses” were written by E. Cameron Larios to whom I am grateful for guidance and support. However, we couldn’t reach the same agreement as the other contributors with whom I split this game’s earnings 50/50. I really admire both poems and have always wanted to share them thru type dreams, but they shouldn’t be included in the compiled build, even if only accessible thru hex-edits. Sorry, Cam.

Thanks to both of you, Nicknicolau and bartterpstra, for sharing these thoughts. I’m struggling to articulate my feelings here haha but it really means something to me that you both explored so much of this. I remember bart’s posts from way back when type dreams was first new to itchio and how they’ve helped shaped what’s still there, now. Would love to see either of your “Stats” screens haha — does Nick’s WPM line slope upward over all 300??? Seriously, thanks for singing out, here.

Cheers!

I am missing some data stored on 1 or 2 laptops which have since gone bust (ha!), but I have some save data from 2019 that says my WPM hovered around 40 with an accuracy of about 95%.

Today, I can do 73 wpm without stressing too much and still 95% accuracy. Aiming for 100% drops me down to around 50 wpm. I do also own 2 typewriters I picked up on the cheap, they make good paperweights.

Now that instability edition is available again, I hope to check it out, because the only versions I still had were .99 and .9m.

Cheers to you as well!

Have you still got your hands any copies of the game? I can't find them anywhere else on the internet, there's not even that many videos of gameplay online. If you've got them please send them to remberbl(at)proton(dot)me because I'd like to archive them somewhere safe.
