About the controls, I must defend my man Sleepy Fellow! hahah, you actually can change direction mid-air, just not when in the pinwheels, this is intended to give you the chance to choose your jump direction.
Said this, yes, you are actually totally right that the game is asking for some polish in the controls, specially when it's a platformer and you can't platform properly in some situations. I didn't prioritise properly, and it's something I learnt to do jam :)
