Monster Codex: The Roc
Rocs are large, predatory birds known for their mighty carrying capacity. These birds prey upon elephants and other large animals by lifting them into the air, then dropping them to the ground. Rocs are largely uninterested in human prey, making attacks uncommon. However, rocs may pose a threat when starved and desperate for food or when provoked.
The main cause of roc-related fatalities are from "roc-riding". This is a sport often practised by adolescents where one climbs onto a roc in order to ride it. This often leads to either the roc attacking the rider or for the rider to lose their grip and fall. Roc-riding is heavily discouraged for these reasons.
Rocs are migratory and will often travel across oceans towards arid regions. During this migration, rocs will eat dolphins, small whales, sharks and even young krackens. This is a dangerous time for a roc, however, as they may be eaten by adult krackens or sea serpents.
