I tried to use the wayback machine with pinballmap.com to see if I could find any past listing for the cabinet. The database isn't really searchable in archive version, but on the Aug 18 2010 archive of the homepage, back when the pinball map was still local to Portland, Oregon, there is a single reference to the game in the (broken) high score ticker at the bottom on the page. "GC [game clear, I think?] with 99,000,000 by PBM Church of Elvis Junji Ito."

"Church of Elvis" refers to the 24 hour Church of Elvis, a semi-permanent art installation that did feature electromechanical coin-operated exhibits, albeit not commercial amusement devices. However, by 2010 the church of Elvis had closed, downsized, and re-opened in a storefront window that would not have room for a full-sized pinball cabinet. My guess is that this high score was an "easter egg" reference to the much-rumored machine rather than a genuine high score listing.

The more that comes about this machine, the less clear it gets! Is it some sort of industry joke, maybe?

Maybe. Pinball fans are known to have a sense of humor. Perhaps by 2010 the game had already taken on "cryptid" status, where the appeal of sightings make it attractive to pranksters. But still, Portland is a pinball town. If this game was ever available to buy by anyone, I feel like the chances that it passed through here at some point are high. I guess I'll keep looking.
