Thank you for informing people, your posts have been quite helpful, especially because it cleared up why my report didn't appear to do anything.

I have a more specific question which I hoped you could answer; I downloaded a free (probable) scam game, got suspicious and found the paid version on steam. By that point it had completed the download, whereupon I instantly deleted it. I am using the desktop app with the sandbox, but I was wondering whether purely downloading could pose a risk.

The game is    , something interesting happened while I was writing this actually, previously a comment called this out (which is now deleted) and it seems that they moved the download to an external source so you cant see that it is smaller than the original.

The criminals will try everything. That's why I do not talk about specific things they do, as it changes. Like the thing with the comments you noticed. And yes, what you linked is a fake. And it is hard to spot at a glance.

Merely downloading in theory should not pose a risk. Depends on the circumstances. I do not really use the Itch app. Downloading a zip and even unzipping it, poses near zero risk. You still might mistake the file for another file and accidents like that.
