Is there any way to make the final level (Sandy's Tower, not the endless mode) less tediously difficult?

Every time I've died it's because I get stuck on a narrow part between two masses of enemies, with no ability to dodge or break through

Am I just supposed to bash my head against it until I've bought enough passive buffs to brute-force it?

It depends on your build and what character you are using (each character alters the way their signature spell works) but generally,  its easier to pause at the entrance to the narrow section, fight until you see an opening, then rush to the other side of it.
