When you say traditional 2D chess, do you mean a classic flat/top-down board view (non-isometric)? If so, that's a great idea — I'll definitely consider it
Actually I’d buy both of them (same 2D top-down chess board) - but a flat 2D chess piece style, and then a more detailed almost like 2.5D. I found some examples to illustrate:
