The fundamental size of each tile being fixed at 8x8 is due to hardware specifications, not a software design trade-off. The Game Boy has another mode that supports 8x16 hardware sprites. I recommend trying actors. While their underlying structure is still based on 8x8 or 8x16 tiles, actors allow multiple sprite tiles to be combined into a larger entity. Actors also support many advanced features.
