I work best off of seeing your content (or concepts, ideas, visions, what have you) and some references for what music you'd like to accompany your game. From there, I'll make my best imitation of it that I can while still breathing new life into the music. For example, my piece, "Fishcraft," is based off of Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley themes.
