Better controls might have saved this but the difficulty to throw with e which is right next to wasd as well as being limited to 4 direction (hard to push W and D and E at the same time!) make it really hard.. best strategy maybe patience (go to the start of the river and hope for a good combo to walk across)
randomization of the ice made it hard too..
Maybe a constant throw distance or at least an indicator of the distance as you charge would have helped immensely.
For speed running you can throw, then jump after it, then hover in mid-air while you charge the throw meter and throw again! (also you can double/triple jump if you mash the spacebar fast enough ;) )

The game certainly need balance patch to make it easier on beginning and increase difficulty with time. It's cool you found out speed run technique :D
Game is simple (main motivation was 3D game) but gives player choice to find path by patience of just risk by throwing boxes. That's kind of design i wanted to make, give possibility of choice. Of course because of lack of time game is simplified to not punish player for failure.
Congratulations to your son passing the game! That's great achievement! I'm glad game gave him so much engagement to keep doing it :D
After jam I will update game with balance patch and coop feature (2 players locally). That's game that could be funny for family meetings.
