So Elliot (in Step 1 and 2) is a super polite and respectful kid like a little too polite. He’ll make himself uncomfortable just to avoid inconveniencing anyone. He keeps most of his thoughts to himself because he’s terrified of accidentally hurting someone’s feelings, even when he disagrees. You could say he’s a bit of a people pleaser and very dependent on the people he’s close to. But Elliot in Step 3?  He's the total opposite. He’s now an IDGAF kind of guy. He just goes with the flow and he actually has boundaries now. If you cross them he’ll cut you off instantly with NO second chances he’ll just move on. He’s still polite but he’s not letting anyone walk over him anymore and he’s not inconveniencing himself just to keep others happy anymore.

I can say that AI is similar to a certain extent; she never tells others about her feelings or what bothers her! She might distance herself from you without you even knowing why. You might think you're friends, but she's upset about something you're doing, yet she won't tell you until suddenly she cuts you off. This is because she likes to be liked, and anything that causes hostility or discord is unwelcome. However, the difference from Elliot is that she remains this way in the second step as well. I don't know about the third step yet, but she'll probably stay this way.

Wow I can see the resemblance (minus the people pleaser+dependence aspect as how she's able to just cut people off).

Tbh in my first design he was supposed to go through a full depressive-teenager arc in Step 2 (being moody and closed off), a little bit like Qiu and then turn into this totally indifferent guy in Step 3 who didn’t care about anyone (even Opal sadly). Then in Step 4 he would’ve mellowed out and become a calm, trustworthy person who always smiles. But I ended up scrapping that storyline ┐⁠(⁠´⁠д⁠`⁠)⁠┌
