Timothy's first impression of Ren is kind of mixed but he tries to give him the benefit of the doubt.
It wasn't the first time he encountered a kid like Ren, in Timothy's opinion, some kids back in his previous hometown are much more direct about disliking another gender (i.e. those kids often point out how Timothy looks and sounds too much of a girl than being a boy).
So Ren isn't worse in his book but he didn't slide the fact how Ren acted around Tamarack.
Over time, Timothy had gotten more comfortable with Ren when hanging out with the boys' club. He can't really compete Ren's likeness with Qiu but he hoped Ren would warm up to him the same. And so, Timothy continued to poke Ren from time to time with Qiu's support, waiting to come out of his shell.
Ah yes, Baxter Ward. Timothy thinks highly of him. Both observant but also quiet? And funny? That's so much like Timothy (except Timothy is too 'hyper' than being oh so mature), but Baxter does it much cooler. He would have been Timothy's role model lol but Timothy had trouble connecting with Baxter in the beginning. It's his first time meeting another kid like Baxter. Timothy wondered how Qiu managed to befriend him, since he wants to be friends as well.
Joining boys' club overall made him hesitant at first, it didn't sit right with Timothy at all. Especially joining without Tamarack. But Qiu's sincere feelings and thoughts persuade Timothy to join the club, not to fit right in but at least to have more friends to hang out with.
