Funny you mentioned that you were going to make something similar originally because, I didn't really plan on making a platformer! lol It sort of grew into it (my original idea was more story-based). So, although I did my best of making one for the first time, I realize I have much to learn about the genre. So yeah, what you pointed out is very valuable for me.
