can you add a windows or android download?
Nope. My personal philosophy is that if something can run in the browser it should run in the browser. It’s just safer.
Based on this forum post while Itch does have virus and malware scanning, “VirusTotal is not accurate enough in a lot of cases for us to automatically suspend content, so typically content gets put into a review queue where we human review it.”
While I would never knowingly distribute malware, if something sneaky made it into an executable program that I put up for download I would never forgive myself.
HTML5 games are just MUCH SAFER, and it’s better if you don’t have to trust me bro to enjoy the game.
i think thats being overly paranoid. malware would not just randomly appear in an executable you made, it would have to be put there by an attacker who either compromised your computer or itch.io itself, if either of those happened there would be much bigger problems to worry about. the only precautions developers need to do are informing users to only download from the official sources. the only other thing i can think of for security on the developers side would be including a file checksum, so users could verify they have a file that has not been tampered with. it makes sense from the users perspective to be cautious about what they download and run, but i cant see how an honest developer making their game browser only changes that. in the end its fine to make a browser game as long as it does not limit what you want to do, and i dont have a problem with your decision.
You’re not wrong that it’s overly paranoid but as an example the Cow Girl Vending Machine project I have is necessarily a locally run application.
When initially distributing it, several users were getting notifications from windows that it was being blocked as a known trojan threat by windows defender. I was legitimately concerned that LibGDX, the framework that I rely on, had somehow been compromised.
Apparently this was all a known issue through the construo build system it uses to package EXEs, and in a later version LibGDX actually downgraded the construo version they use just to mitigate these false positives.
Regardless, it was a few days of no sleep for me, worrying that I’d been compromised, the toolchain I use was compromised, and somehow I had been unwittingly spreading malware to friends and customers. (눈_눈)
Web-only distribution where web-only distribution works is less work, and less headache. ┐( ̄ヮ ̄)┌
