Which version did you have before the update?
If it was 0.2.2.8 then unfortunately too many changes have been added into the game which made that save data incompatible with the new version - I'm sorry but you'll have to start over from the beginning.
If it was 0.3 then the save data should be compatible with latest 0.4.
Are you perhaps on Android?
If so, then I have a feeling you uninstalled the old version and installed new one - this way you deleted all your save data, for future download the new build and install it on top of existing h this way you won't lose your progress
