That could work, or potentially have only one item like coal that has a burning variant and the rest are extinguished, or anything burning (Im only thinking wood/coal/leaves in this) that is picked up becomes it's own item like embers that are maybe half the fuel level (if it exists) of a piece of coal or the same as a freshly ignited leaf.
