Relatable is right.
Ironically, I had the same experience trying to write a short story about drowned towns. I managed to grind something out, but it wasn’t good, and my wife told me so. Then I had an inspiration of a way to rewrite it that would make it good … only when I actually tried to do so, it didn’t work.
So ideal choice of subject matter!
