Monster Codex: The Kracken
Krackens are colossal squids known for their tendency to sink the ships of passing sailors. Very little is known about them due to their deep sea habitat, but due to their migrations up towards the surface, we have a rough understanding of their behaviours.
Krackens are incredibly intelligent solitary hunters, and as such, hunt down large prey, particularly whales. It is believed krackens became so large to regulate body temperature in the deep sea, as well as to ward off predators. They likely mistake boats for prey while hunting, and typically leave after realizing their error.
Like most cephalopods, krackens possess the ability to change colours. This ability is used to capture prey and for courtship. Males will often flash beautiful patterns in order to impress females and to ward off other males. These patterns have inspired many clothing designs around the world.
