im not sure if im just bad at the game or not, but how do you not go further into debt? I just go down the rabbit hole and can't seem to get into the positives, maybe I'm missing a strategy? pls help :(

Popularity is important and putting out a lot of items with negative popularity rating may tank you! Also, you get bonuses for setting items of the same "type" on the table (fossils/bones together, rocks together, treasures together, and even trash together). Popular trash can sometimes be better than unpopular treasure :)
