I can't "befriend" the t-rex miniboss in the desert; when I empty their heart meter, nothing happens. Is this intentional?

I've tried it and haven't been able to replicate the error.
Could you tell me what happened? You couldn't get any more blue hearts out of him? He kept attacking?
I could get more blue hearts from his attacks, but he wouldn't stop attacking me.
I should note that this happened to me in Firefox.
