Animal Blood doesn't seem to work, my health was 8/18 and ate but the food disappeared.
I experimented a little with this. The Animal Blood seems to prevent the player's Hunger meter from depleting while under 50% health. This may be what it was intended to do as opposed to using a food card and not losing it.
