Currently working on my submission for the Game Jam called "LAST TUNNEL HOME" :
Last Tunnel Home by Insane For God

The idea for the game is pretty simple, it's just a basic text game where you're alone and explore dark tunnels and encounter monsters.  My main goal is to try to tell a fun but scary original story in such a way that the player walks away from the game learning something meaningful.

I'll use this thread as my unofficial devlog and would love to hear thoughts about the game so far to try to improve my submission.

Core Elements I Need To Implement:

-Player Death (right now nothing happens, game just continues)

-Small bug fixes on items and menus

-More items (100 items should be easy since I programmed the system to be modular and easy to update)

-Survival balance (right now the game is too hard and too unbalanced against the player)

-meta-shop upgrades (the miles you walk increase your total points so your next play through you can start with better stats and equipment)

Looking good. Can the player move through locations in the current version?

in the currently uploaded version that you can play test right now, there’s no individual locations, only exploring the tunnels. But I am working on adding locations, and some other secrets. Right now I’m mostly just trying to add content and write in entries for items and other descriptions. Also thanks for your comments!

Just updated the WIP Last Tunnel Home.

There is now a player death state that ends the game when the player runs out of Hunger, Thirst, Rest or Health.

I implemented 1 Location, which is a small area that can be searched and explored.

I added Health, Hunger, Thirst and Rest bars on the main screen so progress can be easily viewed while exploring the tunnels rather than needing the player to constantly check the player stats page.

I fixed a few bugs with inventory etc.

There are, of course, still many more things I need to implement such as:

-Meta-Shop for increased replayability

-Add more items (I wanted to do 100 items total, right now there's only about 18 unique items)

-Add more locations (these are really hard to design and add tbh but I need at least 5 locations to make sure my code works well with different ideas and is modular enough)

-add more monsters (I want to get at least 20 monsters)

-implement the Journal system (which keeps track of different monsters you've killed, your dreams and memories, and the wider story)

-Balance survival aspects (right now food and thirst are all over the place and I need to balance this better)

-fix bugs (these seem to be endless...)

Extra thoughts:

I CAN'T BELIEVE THERE'S ONLY 2 DAYS LEFT OF THE GAME JAM! I'm not really happy with my game and wish I'd spent more time in the idea stage rather than just running with the first thing I imagined. Unfortunately, I don't think my game is actually all that "fun" even if it meets a lot of the requirements of the jam. The other projects and people in this jam have me hoping that I can place at least top 5 and I'll be happy.
