Am I correct saying that only a few  trees are actually set up for animation in the GameMaker project, all character animations I have to set up myself? Is it the same for the other engines?

Yes, that could be true. While the character sprites are inside the engine, there isn’t a character coded to playtest them, since each person uses them in a different way. The same goes for the other engines.
