Beyond that, definitely keep practicing! You had some good ideas that worked separately, they just didn't work as well when you put them together. Music theory is great and can be super helpful to understanding what notes work best together. You don't have to know it, but it certainly makes life easier. Either way, just keep messing around in your DAW and experimenting with different sound combinations. Once you get a good melody or a beat going, add another instrument. Don't add a third instrument until you get your first two to sound good together. You'll get there!
