To answer your question about the strings, I didn't use any special techniques or anything, just a lot of automation on the modulation and expression. I used a combination of Spitfire solo strings, 8dio intimate studio strings, Performance Samples Vista and EW Hollywood Strings 2. I used a lot more libraries than usual on the advice of another composer I met with recently.
