According to the game structure, if you have a problem understanding what to do next, you have 3 options (and you delve into the game's plot, not skip the text):
1. Go to the bartender in the tavern (hint on the plot, sometimes on hidden quests)
2. Go to the fortune teller (hint on personal quests, some of them can be hidden)
3. Go to the library. There is all the information you need to understand the mechanics of the game.
In your case, the fortune teller will most likely help you. But, for a better understanding of the logic of the game, I would recommend reading all the books in the library. There are not so many of them.
