The underlying heightmap renderer did evolve into a Monte Carlo pathtracer with some materials even: https://www.shadertoy.com/view/M3VBWt there is more optimisations to be made and another projected I started now tries to do a bit of physics on these pillars.
Looking forward to upcoming jams as a clear goal and deadline helps me stay motivated!
