it always spawns at the same time in a level, but it's very possible to miss it or accidentally kill it off screen (i should do something about that).
when you know when to expect it, try to not move around too much at that time - it moves in the direction you where when it spawned, not where you are. if it still doesn't appear, search nearby for the ring. and if all else fail, take a death to retry ^^;
