But does it have any effect on the countdown? I've assumed I wasn't good at it because while the bar was maxxed-out, I still had the countdown going down fast!

Sorry, the instructions could perhaps be a little clearer.. The countdown keeps going down because you have to make it to the record label at the end before they close! My intent was its a race to the end of the level, regardless of the beat, but its good feedback. Perhaps it might nice if you stay on the beat the countdown slows down or stops.
