well originally it was a hamster ball but we thought a different animal inside could be more fun, we used a fish asset from a big animal pack as a placeholder while building the controller and I kinda grew attached to it so when I went to make the assets we decided to keep it a fish (just a different one).
Conceptually the fish is the kid’s pet. So anything in that realm could have gotten picked by us.
