I like the Katamari Damacy space ball idea.  I think the rock density may be too low.  I spent a lot of time waiting to see something big enough to slingshot off of.  Late game is also pretty taxing on frames per second.  I got down to 3fps before I had to give up.  I imagine there is a bunch of tiny rocks that are too small to see taking up compute resources.  Maybe these can be cleared based on how large the player is.

I agree balancing is little off. I implemented some LOD based on distance but ofcourse a good enough approach was not good here.
