I also had that error. I managed to get out by getting engaged in combat.
how? for me, it completely freezes
The screen is black, but if I hit tab again it goes back to the game (even while black). Since it occurred in the sewers, I was able to walk around till combat started.
lucky you, didnt work for me in the swers, and that was after combat
