I get that, the spikes are a bit mean. Their biggest problem is that while they have a visible telegraph, you often can't see it when clinging to a wall, so it often seems like they were waiting for you to jump down. As for reloading, I really liked the idea of swapping between it between hands for cool midair combos and such, but I also often forget to do so, I'll consider other options.
