  • Gameplay What an interesting game! The difficulty is ramping up as you go. I managed to get stuck on the 6th level. You have good theme implementation. Sometimes I had problems anticipating where the fold will happen (I wanted it to happen on the left side of the middle, it happened on the right). You could also add automatic restart if you color the empty spot. Down the line you could add some sort of cover that you would need to place even before folding, that would preserve an empty spot under it. GDD GDD is well made. I liked a lot how you described the process from idea to implementation. Art You have nailed the sudoku like feeling while playing. The wooden background is great. The positioning of the paper and target is good. Sound design Added sound effects add a nice touch to the game and make it way more enjoyable. Overall, this is a solid gamejam submission. It is a great puzzle game and I had a blast playing it. Would love to play this as a mobile game. Keep up the good work.

Game Summary
The Paper Folding Game is a level-based puzzle game about folding a piece of paper in different orientations to spread blots of ink to produce different geometric designs. The initial condition of starting with a single blot of ink poses the challenge to the player to determine the right set of folds to produce the designed design.

Gameplay
The gameplay involves rotating and folding a piece of paper. Each fold provides an opportunity for ink on one side of the page to spread to the other side of the page. Rotating the page allows the player to fold in different directions. The challenge of the came emerges from:
Non-intuitive nature of how ink spreads across a diagonal fold
Negative spaces in the target pattern, which must be preserved
Limited toolkit requiring clever thinking to achieve even simple designs
The game starts with a small paper, which consequently has fewer possible action and possible designs, allowing the player to ease into the mechanics. As levels progress, the page sizes increase, and so does the complexity of the target patterns.

Mechanics
There are two main mechanics in the game:
Rotation - allows the player to rotate the page in 45 degree increments to fold the page across different symmetries or find ways to re-approach the path from the current paper’s state and the target pattern.
Folding - allow the player to fold at particular intervals along the pages length. The pages themselves are a square grid arrangement of cells. Players can fold along the edges between these cells or along the diagonals of the cells.
Reset - Not a core mechanic of the game, but to encourage experimentation, and for my personal sanity, added the ability to reset a page to the level’s initial state. An undo option for a single move or a rewind-able history of moves is not available. The start to end of the final solution needs to be carefully tested and rehearsed.

Please explain how your game fits the theme.
As mentioned in the inspiration section, I was pulled towards presenting the player with a challenge of making more from very little (from only one of something in fact). In the context of this game, that is the single spot of ink provided at the start of each level, which the player must try to distribute across the page by folding in different directions, and reproducing a target pattern.

Adorable game! Lots of thinking required. I know it's supposed to be a contemplative game, but if I manage to get the pattern and it's rotated 180 degrees I would rather quit than have to sit here and watch it slide slowly around.

But it's clever! And fits the theme well, I think.

This is a lovely little puzzle game. I wish it had some more polish, like folding animations and activating the instruction tabs on screen to be button. A solid little puzzler <3
