I don't know if it was changed, but in the current version of that game the one hiding is an adult and the other character is her sister.
There's actually a guide of sorts that includes the scene on YouTube, but without the player talking to the mother. It's 12:25 of this video.
Oh, yeah, at 12:30-ish, the text is different from the version I have. The game must have been updated since that video was recorded. In the current version the girl was made to be a soldier doing stealth training.
