Considering your situation I'd say you've done a pretty good job! Some of the planks can come out of nowhere and guarantee end your run but that may be intentional as you said the game is supposed to represent how abrupt climate disasters are. Still, the game has a pretty nice gameplay loop and the wind was an interesting mechanic. Keep it up and you'll only do better in the future!
