Monero Support? (For user privacy & avoiding censorship from payment providers)

Heya, not sure what people here think of crypto in general, but it'd be really nice if it was possible to support game creators completely anonymously using a privacy coin like monero, thus this feature request. Methods to receive monero (some options support other cryptos too) can be found here: https://getmonero.dev/accepting-monero/overview.html
Pros:

  • More business from people who can't or don't want to use debit or paypal.
  • Cheaper transaction fees (monero fees seem to average around ~6 cents)
  • Allow people to pay for things anonymously (monero transactions origins, destinations, and amounts are cryptographically obfuscated)
  • Decouple platform reliance from centrally controlled currencies (e.g. if there is worry that centralized currencies may be managed poorly in the future for one reason or another)
  • Edit: Threats of censorship from payment providers may hold less weight (depending on how many people use crypto).

Cons:

  • May be illegal in some countries: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legality_of_cryptocurrency_by_country_or_territory
  • Depending on whether the monero is exchanged immediately, may have tax implications (i.e. capital gains)
  • May have moral implications: most cryptos are created to benefit initial investors (i.e. pump and dump schemes), and even if they aren't, use often affects price creating an incentive for existing holders to evangelize for its use. Monero is slightly more trustworthy in this aspect as it is designed to be somewhat inflationary (so people are incentivized to spent it and don't just buy and hold) but in the short-to-medium term use still effects price which makes it something to keep in mind. One could in theory offset this by supporting as many cryptos as possible, which might not be too hard depending on the payment processor used.
  • Edit: Environmental effects - Low in general for monero even though it uses proof of work, will be a big concern for older cryptos like Bitcoin tho.
  • May unknowingly be party to money laundering / receiving stolen funds. This is technically true for all payment methods, but its probably more likely with crypto in general, and monero in particular. For monero you won't know whether funds were stolen due to its design but it is something to consider.

Edit July 24th 2025: Add stuff about payment provider censorship and environmental concerns.

I would love to have Monero support too!

Would be nice! But please, don't use a payment method that requires KYC or access to your crypto, like Coinbase or BitPay...

LTC, BCH, BTC Lightning... is welcome as well. Bitcoin support failed because it was probably mainnet only, and isn't fit for small transactions like on itch.

Sounds very cool, but usdc or usdt is better in this case i think

Just following up on this as it seems timely. Monero specifically (for its anonymity properties) but crypto in general would probably be a decent way to shift reliance away from payment providers who cave to censorship requests resulting in damage to the developer ecosystem.
