Hi! Thanks a lot for your comment.

Unfortunately, we haven’t encountered this exact error before.

We’re really sorry this happened to you 😔

Here are a few things you could try that might help:

  1. Temporarily disable your antivirus – Sometimes antivirus software blocks files that Unreal Engine needs. Try disabling it or adding the game folder to the exceptions.
  2. Update your graphics card drivers – This error seems to be related to DirectX 12. Make sure your GPU drivers are fully up to date.
  3. Check your DirectX installation – Ensure DirectX 12 is installed and running properly.
  4. Run the game as administrator – This can help with permission issues.
  5. Disable overlays – Some overlays (like Discord, GeForce Experience, etc.) can cause issues with Unreal Engine.

Also, if I’m not mistaken, there should be a folder inside the game’s directory containing some essential installation files for Unreal Engine components (like DirectX, VC Redistributables, etc.). Try going to:

[GameFolder]\Engine\Extras\Redist\en-us

And run the installers you find there – they might help fix the issue.

Again, we’re really sorry for the inconvenience, and we’ll do our best to improve compatibility in the future!

i swear DirectX is going to drive me insane

thanks for your the info! i thought the problem was about the antivirus, but it’s just my broken DirectX. for clarification, this is a me problem - it’s not related to the build at all.

for some reason my copy of DirectX 12 is broken. i found out when trying another Unreal game, Fortnite. however, Fortnite does also support DirectX 11, which was slightly less broken – the issue for it was only a corrupted .dll file and i managed to fixed it myself, but games using DirectX 12 don’t even boot.

i didn’t find any DirectX 12 installers in the directory you mentioned, only for redistributables. anyways, i’ll try to find other ways to make the game work.

heck, i even tried using Virtual Machines, but the one i installed (VirtualBox) doesn’t have really good compatibility with DirectX, so i guess my last shot is to try it on VMware or on my other computer.

thanks again for the support! i’ll update this thread if i find something. maybe for some folk that might be facing the same issue (with broken directx preinstalled Xd)

I HAVE DONE IT!!!!!!!!! YAY

thanks for insisting that the problem was my DirectX12 because otherwise i wouldn’t have figured this out.

i applied the same fix i did for fortnite to this game. the Epic Games launcher allows you to write certain commands when launching a game to set certain properties to it. there’s one that forces the current game to run on DirectX version 11.

“-d3d11”

however, you can’t add local games to the Epic Games launcher to make this work. but you know where you can? in Steam! it’s pretty easy actually, you just select the executable and it will be added to your library, and Steam also supports these special launch commands.

i added it there and the game finally booted. it was quite laggy, but it worked. although the second time it was ran, the game crashed and returned a fatal error, but this can also fixed by restarting the computer.

i now have my review on the Game Jam submission page of the game.

That's awesome to hear, huge thanks for sharing your solution! Really glad you figured it out and that I could help a bit along the way. Hope you enjoy the game! Thanks a ton for leaving a review too, it means a lot!
