Thanks for the explanation. Maybe you should make it so the protagonist thinks to himself something like "She's suspicious of me. I Shouldn't leave any traces behind" or something more specific
There actually is a line pointing to this behaviour, when she's already suspicious and to try to give her anything other than gift, like "(I should be more careful next time)"
This gives you small hint as to how to proceed during next night.
