Your memory's absolutely correct; the movie's pretty garbage every second Aaliyah's not on screen. But it has that certain flavor of self-conscious, unearned confidence especially prevalent in the late nineties/early 2000s that I find kinda comforting on a bad day. So very try-hard, so oddly nostalgic.
