Did waking up the guardian work the first time?
If so, I wonder if you've stumbled upon some very obscure bug, or if there is weird browser mischief afoot. Something to look into for me!
In any case, you could try reloading the page, I think that should work. If not, something like starting a new game + the emptying the cache with ctrl + F5 should do the trick.
