You're kinda meant to hit space in the middle of the words unless you want to be hit by saws!! So I think you did well to keep jumping! Some words don't spawn in indeed, and looking back I know realize that getting hit by the saw triggers an animation (the detected + splash warning) and the end of that animation triggers the next word to clear its letter slots...
