My favorite aspect of the game was how layered sounds made the environment feel very real, even with the pared down graphics of a retro game. Actions felt more satisfying simply because of the accompanying noise--the click of a photograph, the static and whirr of recording. With the ambient night loops, the nirn-flower-beckoning-hum of the portals, the unsettling murmurs of ghosts, and the way sound responsively varied as the character moved over terrain, a sense of tactile reality was imparted to the simple surroundings.
Also loved the little ghost hunter and how adorably she walked when recording, how the cone of light circled smoothly as she turned. That was so much fun, I wished it could be a toggle. As a keyboard/mouse only player, holding down the LMB for extended periods can be tiring. The jewel-bright foliage on the trees when lit from below with the vid cam was oddly wonderful to see, just flashes of vividness in the overall gloom.
Another thing on my wish list would be for the controls to include a RMB function of panning the camera and adjusting the character's direction, like it works in many mmo's. Not sure if there's some technical limitation to going that route or if it would have been contrary to the N64 style.
Charming game with delightful elements that appealed greatly to a bit of a fraidy cat when it comes to most horror genre games! Discovered quite a liking for this mysterious night setting, the palpable, spatial ambience of spooky sounds, and the tingly suspense of what was going to turn my screen red as something nibbled bare toes once again. Thank goodness for the little researcher by the fire retrieving my napping girl without fail! ^.^
