About the gameplay, I think you're right. The economy I've made seems rather slow, which I was actively trying to avoid but somehow ended up doing the very thing. I feel like maybe the upgrades being unlocked through a certain amounts of plants harvested might have been a better idea as well. I will try to fix these issues once the jam ends, some of them are already on my todo list for this week :)
