So I finished Burry's route, and there's one thing that kept bothering me. What exactly happens when someome goes "Ablaze"? Since Burry can forcefully invoke Ablaze through putting someone through extreme stress, what exactly does that mean for the person?

One thing that bothered me was when Luke supposedly went into Ablaze during one of the flashbacks in Max's route, human mana crystals started popping up around him. Are the crystals a byproduct of Ablaze? And ever since then (I Think), Luke lost his memories of everything.

What I'm currently assuming is that when a person experiences extreme stress or trauma, they undergo Ablaze, and lose their memories (?) in the process as their mana starts to crystalize around them. This might explain the crystals that appeared in Alon's backstory. So if mana is your life experiences and memories (?), then the crystals that have a person's mana is their memories that a person going into Ablaze expelled?

Sorry, I'm trying to write a fanfic about Shelter and I need clarification :'(

This is just what I think happens so take it with a grain of salt!

I think mana is just memories taking physical forms, they stay in the air when they form, so when you use magic, the cost it has is that you're burning those memories, even the ones that aren't yours, (mostly the ones that are floating in the air and present around you), the stronger the memories are, the stronger they burn. So going ablaze is just burning throught the memories that surround you so quickly that you also start burning the ones inside you too, I believe that inside your body and inside the creatures in general, mana is present in the blood (and saliva, mostly fluids I assume). In times of need a creature concentrates it on a liquid like blood, and if there happens to be a lot of mana on it (like going ablaze), the moment that liquid touches the air the reaction happens so quickly it cristalizes instead of burning.

We see this as Alon bites the hand of that guy, or when Luke is stabbed on the past sequence, etc.

[SPOILERS] btw

I believe Luke is the only one (who we know of) that has lost memories when going through ablaze. This is because instead of the typical components for an ember (multiple charges of mana across different species), Luke burned his core memories to grant the necessary mana to perform miracles like...purifying monsters, or granting all-seeing eyes.

How he does this? We don't know, just as Luke probably doesn't anymore. Maybe that'll be expanded on more in Alon's route. The crystals sprouting from Ablaze also seem to be unique to Luke (even if other crystals exist) but take that with a grain of salt since I honestly don't remember Alon's route all that well.

I can't remember if Ablaze itself was ever fully explained, other than just being the "level" above racial abilities. From what we know, it seems to be a state of heightened mana burning activated through significant life events, which culminates in an Ember: an ultimate move whose composition and effects stem from the life experience that activated ablaze. And from Cooper, we know that this is not something all magic users experience, even living a life of battle.

Not sure if Ablaze must be activated through significant trauma either, or if it can be done through significant emotion of any kind, like joy or love...though I'd imagine the Ember based off of an emotion like that would be more support based than offensive.

But either way, for others, it seems that particularly strong core memories unlock a person's Ablaze, but don't get used up themselves as the fuel for it is provided by external mana.

Hope this helps!

Alright! So fyi, we get info on Ablaze in the latest update.

I was very wrong: Albaze is above Embers in terms of the casting hierarchy. And the crystals are not unique to Luke, Alon uses them as well. I suppose we've just never seen another character go ablaze..?

But anyway. The newest update is HEAVY on the worldbuilding, so, don't miss it!

I think Burry, Alon, Luke, and Rune all went through Ablaze. Don't know about Max though.

Considering it seems like an ember is a product of a person's Ablaze -- usually their first, except for Alon who didn't have the necessary mana for an ember at the time -- that would seem to be correct.

Burry went through Ablaze to save his brothers, Rune went through Ablaze to save himself, Alon went through Ablaze to create his own future, and Luke went through ablaze to save Max. Max himself does not have an Ember (So likely has never reached Ablaze), though he has the most experience with Luke's abilities.
