Yes, it is playable solo. (And I have used the resulting dungeon for a solo RPG). I have played a few solo games so far but looking forward to a few multiplayer games next weekend.
Yes, it is designed to be played solo. However, I will say the solo mode is really focused on being "play as prep," where you are using the game for the purpose of building a dungeon to be used later in a different game.
