Concept of the game was easy to understand, just execution was poor. The depth at which the cursor needs to be at has to be changed. Think in terms of where the marker is, there needs to be the hits. So if the marker is over the plane (due to canvas or art style of choice), where you aim to shoot might be where it just triggers the hits. If you want to give the players a way to fire and have some arch distance to cover, then that shapes the gameplay in a different scope (think Starfox 64 concept with 2 cursors or reticles to help players with depth perception).
